Solar energy has exceeded all expectations, growing at a speed no other technology has ever achieved. Over the past three years, solar electricity generation has doubled\u2014driven by record installations and capable of meeting a significant share of global electricity demand. Its rapid development has helped curb greenhouse gas emissions, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and expand access to electricity, especially in emerging economies.<\/em><\/p>\n

The chart compares the growth speed of electricity generation from different sources\u2014coal, gas, nuclear, wind, hydro, and solar\u2014starting from a common baseline: the point at which each first exceeded 100 terawatt-hours (TWh) of annual generation. This symbolic milestone marks the moment when a source shifts from marginal to significant within the global power mix. From that point onward, the graph tracks for each source how many TWh were produced in the following decades, up to another reference threshold: 2,000 TWh.<\/p>\n

In the case of solar energy, the data refer almost entirely to photovoltaic generation, which today represents virtually all solar power produced worldwide. This is precisely the segment that has shown the fastest growth rate: it took only eleven years\u2014from 2013 to 2024\u2014to go from 100 to over 2,000 TWh. Coal and gas, by contrast, each took roughly forty years to reach similar volumes. Of course, the historical contexts were entirely different. Coal first passed the 100 TWh mark in the early 1920s; gas did so around the early 1950s, coinciding with the construction of the first gas-fired power plants in the United States and later in the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

In 2024, solar generation surpassed 2,100 TWh\u2014an increase of 29% over the previous year (+474 TWh), according to the Global Electricity Review<\/em> by the think tank Ember. It marked the third consecutive year in which solar energy led global electricity growth. After taking eight years to reach its first 1,000 TWh, it needed only three more years to double that figure. Without solar photovoltaic generation, global electricity-sector emissions in 2024 would have been 12% higher (+1.658 million metric tons of CO\u2082)\u2014the equivalent of the entire U.S. power sector\u2019s emissions.<\/p>\n

Following the 2022 energy crisis, solar production also accelerated within the European Union. But today, 58% of global solar generation takes place outside the OECD, with China alone accounting for 39% and dominating the world\u2019s production of solar panels.<\/p>\n
