From 1957 to today, there have been 6,500 successful launches of objects into space, which have allowed a dense constellation of satellites to orbit: as of December 6, 2023, there were 11,500 satellites, of which 9,000 are still operational. 2023 has seen an unprecedented number of space launches. These include not only small satellites necessary for telecommunications operations, earth resource detection, or monitoring of seas and oceans, but also orbital capsules and spacecraft (the latter, for example, used for resupply missions). The four most dynamic actors in space activities\u2014United States, China, Russia, and Europe\u2014carried out 192 launches, a 156% increase compared to 2016, when there were only 75.<\/span><\/p>\n

The number of launches conducted by the United States has increased more than fourfold (from 22 to 107) in seven years, making the U.S. the country that performs the most space launches in the world since 2022. Similarly, China, which in 2016 had the same number of launches as the United States, has also seen significant growth: its launches have tripled in seven years, from 22 to 63. Over the same period, the number of launches from Russia has remained stable, averaging about twenty per year. Europe remains at the tail end of this international comparison, with only three launches in 2023, six fewer than in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s All About Investment<\/b><\/h3>\n

The significant difference between the United States and the rest of the world appears to be the scale of investment in the sector, especially public investment. In the graph, investments are represented by the thickness of the lines, and it is evident that the United States, which already initially spent more, has strengthened its hegemony: overall, between private and public investments, it has increased from an investment in space of $48.2 billion in 2016 to $86.9 billion in 2023. Conversely, Chinese and Russian investments have been much lower and declining, although these figures should be taken with some caution as the two countries only partially publish data in this sector. Europe also invested much less, although there has been growth over time: total investments increased from $9.6 billion in 2016 to $13.3 billion in 2023. The dominance of the United States can also be explained by the presence of major players like Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which, with the Starlink project, has launched more than 70% of all U.S. space objects, somewhat skewing the global space market. These launches operated by private companies are still largely financed by agencies (such as NASA) or other entities (like the Department of Defense), which invest in the research and production of space objects and often purchase the services that the research of private companies enables them to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n
