On 29 May, legislative elections were held and, regardless of the outcome (the African National Congress remains the first party, but lost its absolute majority in Parliament), one thing is certain: poverty and racial inequalities are still very much present. For 2023, the International Monetary Fund estimates that the growth of the gross domestic product will be 0.9%. The average income of South Africans has fallen to 1994 levels and, according to World Bank data, unemployment was close to 35% last year. Also noteworthy is the sharp increase in inequalities: the Gini coefficient, which measures them, stands at 0.63 points, the highest in the world. Contributing to the slowdown in growth are widespread corruption and an alarmingly high and rising crime rate: 47 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, a number six times higher than in the United States.

If Afghanistan opens to tourism

After destroying one of the country’s main cultural heritage sites, the Buddhas of Bamiyan, the Taliban are now trying to attract tourists to Afghanistan. However, the idea seems impracticable: apart from China, no country recognises the Taliban government, due to its lack of respect for human rights, especially women’s rights. If tourists really do return, how will the locals interact with foreign women? Western women’s habits might clash with local customs and laws. In Afghanistan, for example, women cannot smoke, eat in public, or accompany men who are not blood relatives or husbands. The right to education is denied, so much so that girls are not allowed to continue their studies beyond elementary school and, according to UNESCO data, 80% of school-age girls, about 2.5 million, do not attend school. Moreover, since the Taliban returned to power, the infrastructure is in tatters, exports are in sharp decline, and poverty is rampant. According to data from the United Nations Development Programme, only 40% of the population has access to electricity, and 90% live in poverty or near poverty.

Sudan sinks further into the abyss

A year has passed since the beginning of the war in Sudan. Without immediate aid, half a million people could die of starvation in the country, which has the highest number of internally displaced persons in the world. Finance Minister Gibril Ibrahim stated that the economy collapsed by 40% last year due to the armed conflict between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary unit Rapid Support Forces. For 2024, the government expects a further drop in GDP of 28% due to the severe damage caused by the war to infrastructure, public and private buildings. The Sudanese are suffering the severest consequences: in its latest update, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs reported that 8.1 million people have left their homes since the beginning of the conflict, 6.5 million of whom remain in Sudan. According to the numbers provided by the UN, however, 14,790 people have already lost their lives.

Will Vietnam be the next Asian tiger?

Economic reforms have propelled Vietnam from being one of the world’s poorest nations to a middle-income economy in a matter of decades. Could Vietnam benefit from the trade war between the US and China? With confidence in Beijing declining, the country is in pole position to attract manufacturers looking to reduce exposure to the “Middle Kingdom”, explain analysts at T. Rowe Price. Property transactions and prices are on the rise, while exports and foreign direct investments (FDI) data are also improving. FDI into Vietnam was $2.8 billion in the first two months of 2024, up 9.8% from the same period last year. Samsung, which employs more than 110,000 people in Vietnam, remains the largest foreign investor. In December, Jensen Huang, CEO and chair of Nvidia, visited Hanoi to announce plans to establish a manufacturing base in the country.

News from afar.
