The graph illustrates the extent to which certain professions are at risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence. On the horizontal axis, the difficulty of complete job automation is measured: this indicator assesses how complex it is to fully replace a given profession with AI, considering typically human skills such as critical thinking and social abilities. The variable ranges from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating professions that are more difficult to automate. On the vertical axis, exposure to automation is measured: this indicates how easily a job can be automated, considering factors like repetitiveness or the feasibility of using data analysis. This variable ranges from -1 (low exposure, i.e., little repetitiveness or inability to use data analysis software to simplify the job) to 1 (high exposure, i.e., the opposite). The bubbles in the graph represent various professions divided by sector: red indicates the primary sector, blue the secondary sector, and yellow the tertiary sector. Their sizes reflect the proportion of employees in each sector relative to the total number of employees, indicating the potential impact of AI on different societal sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

A French Study Measures the Situation<\/b><\/h3>\n

The graph is based on a study of the French market whose results can be extended to other developed economies. The research examined 222 professions present in the O*NET database, which provides detailed descriptions of each job and the skills required to perform them. Based on these data\u2014and using artificial intelligence, particularly the ChatGPT4 software\u2014the study developed the two variables reported in the graph.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professions Most at Risk<\/b><\/h3>\n

Automation has long been replacing at least part of human labour: think of the use of robots in industry in recent decades and the consequences for factory workers. With the advent of generative artificial intelligence, however, even intellectual jobs\u2014not just physical ones\u2014now seem at risk. Specifically, in the upper right quadrant of the graph are professions highly exposed to AI because they are repetitive but still difficult to automate: these include psychologists, lawyers, and doctors. In these professions, the human component and social skills are crucial despite some tasks being repetitive. The upper left quadrant, on the other hand, includes the most vulnerable professions, which are easy to automate and highly exposed to this risk: these are jobs that require less creativity or social skills, such as accountants and telemarketers. In the lower part of the graph, we find professions less exposed to automation, typical of the agricultural and industrial sectors where currently few tasks can be automated through artificial intelligence or performed using data analysis. For some professions in these sectors\u2014such as livestock farmers, bricklayers, electricians, and plumbers\u2014difficulty scores are higher than others: overall, they are the least exposed to the risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence. Conversely, the services sector is most exposed to the risk of artificial intelligence replacing workers.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
