The chart above presents the 27 European Union countries on the horizontal axis and the percentage of their land affected by drought on the vertical axis. The red dots and blue triangles represent the percentage of land affected by drought in 2017 and 2022, respectively, the most recent data available.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Treccani dictionary, drought is defined as a condition where precipitation is absent or insufficient for an exceptionally long period. In recent years, this phenomenon has been increasingly common across much of Europe, recurring with greater intensity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The only country in the European Union to show improvement over the five-year period considered was Cyprus. In 2017, 82% of its land was affected by drought, while by 2022, the figure had dropped to just 21%.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the rest of Europe, the situation has worsened and become increasingly critical. The countries that experienced the most severe deterioration are Luxembourg, Belgium, and Slovenia, where over 50% of the land faced water shortages in 2022\u2014a significant increase from the 10-13% reported in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

Italy, which notoriously experiences severe drought in its southern regions whilst the north sees heavy rainfall, recorded the largest percentage of drought-affected land in the European Union in 2017. By 2022, conditions had not improved: the percentage of drought-affected land rose from 163% in 2017 to 176% in 2022. Nevertheless, Italy is among the countries that saw the least severe worsening over the period.<\/span><\/p>\n

Climate change is one of the primary causes of drought, as it reduces precipitation in certain areas and dries up soils, which then lose their capacity to absorb rainwater. For example, Luxembourg\u2014usually considered one of the rainiest countries in Europe\u2014topped the rankings for drought-affected areas. Deforestation and subsequent land-use changes exacerbate this issue by disrupting the natural water cycle and further reducing the soil\u2019s ability to retain moisture.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the European Union, the total economic damage caused by extreme weather events amounted to \u20ac30 billion in 2017, rising to \u20ac52 billion in 2022. Of this damage, 80% was caused by droughts, heatwaves, and wildfires, all of which are steadily increasing.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
