In this graph, we compare the median age of parliament members with the median age of the general population in countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Here, the median divides both groups into younger and older halves. Each dot represents a different country.<\/span><\/p>\n

The graph shows whether a parliament is composed of members who are generally younger or older than the population. This depends on whether a country\u2019s dot lies below or above the bisector \u2014 the 45-degree line that splits the plane. If a country falls above this line, its parliamentarians are older than the median population; if it falls below, they are younger.<\/span><\/p>\n

In none of the OECD countries is the median age of parliamentarians lower than that of the population.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States \u2014 represented by the green dot \u2014 has the highest median age for parliamentarians at 58 years. However, what is most striking is the gap between this figure and the median age of the general population, which stands at 38. This 20-year difference raises questions about the political class\u2019s ability to represent a nation with such a demographic divide. This topic was widely discussed during the campaign for the upcoming presidential election on November 5, especially given the advanced age of the outgoing president and initial Democratic candidate Joe Biden (81 years) \u2014 later replaced by Kamala Harris (who turned 60 on October 20) \u2014 as well as Republican candidate Donald Trump (78 years). Both candidates are significantly older than the median age of the American population.<\/span><\/p>\n

The significant age gap between the political class and the population can be attributed to the high costs associated with entering politics, particularly campaign expenses. These costs create barriers for younger candidates, while older individuals, who often have more financial resources, are in a better position to pursue a political career.<\/span><\/p>\n

Concerns about the advanced age of politicians are not just about their physical and cognitive health; they also relate to their ability to connect with younger generations and address pressing issues like climate change, technological innovation, and civil rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

This issue is not limited to the United States; similar situations are found in other advanced countries, including Japan and Canada. Israel, despite having a lower median age for parliamentarians, has the largest gap with its citizens\u2019 median age: nearly 22 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Italy, the median age of parliamentarians is 49, while the population\u2019s median age is just under 48. The difference is minimal, but Italy and Japan have the oldest electorates among OECD countries.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
