Evidence of this phenomenon is now emerging in INPS (Italian National Social Security Institute) statistics as well. It is crucial to consider this reality, as these events are more common than generally believed. The data also confirms another truth: taking care of others extends life.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Giacomo and Imelda, husband and wife, aged 88 and 87 respectively, lived in complete harmony and passed away within hours of each other on September 27. Browsing through local news, one can find dozens of such stories. Take the case of Nora, who had just turned 87, and who could not bear to live even 24 hours after her husband, Gino, aged 85, passed away. Both were unwell and hospitalized in separate facilities: she was battling multiple myeloma, while he faced severe respiratory issues. They had shared fifty years together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Caring for Others Extends Life<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is difficult to imagine that in these closely timed deaths, the loss of a lifelong partner did not play a role. And these are not just anecdotes; they are frequent events, as confirmed by the latest annual report from INPS. Researchers Diego Pieroni and Valentina Ricci from the Institute examined data on 9.4 million elderly pensioners within INPS\u2019s primary management sectors from 2014 to 2022. Their analysis reveals that losing a spouse increases the surviving partner\u2019s likelihood of death by about 29% for men and 26% for women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These deaths tend to occur within close timeframes. The increase in mortality for widowers is especially pronounced during the first year following the spouse\u2019s death compared to subsequent years, marking a significant void to be filled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the death of a spouse indeed raises the mortality risk for the surviving partner, the opposite is also true. Longevity, in a way, is contagious among cohabitants: those who live longer can also extend the life of their partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demographic projections too often overlook the factors that intertwine the destinies of two individuals. Ignoring these effects leads to systematic inaccuracies in these projections. According to INPS researchers, the increased probability of death following bereavement reduces life expectancy at age 67 \u2014 close to retirement age \u2014 by over a year for women and nearly two years for men. Neglecting this also deprives us of a profound message of love and hope: caring for others can extend life. This may even apply to those who live alone, as there are many ways to care for others.
