The graph illustrates global population growth from 1950 to 2050, highlighting how cities are increasingly attracting people at the expense of rural areas. The 21st century marks a radical shift in population distribution.<\/span><\/p>\n

The vertical axis of the graph measures the total population, rural and urban, in billions, while the horizontal axis indicates the years. By 2050, the global population is expected to reach nearly 9.7 billion, an increase of 1.6 billion compared to 2023. However, the blue and orange lines reveal two opposing trends: the urban population (blue line) is steadily and significantly increasing, while the rural population (orange line), after gradually rising until the early 2000s, is now slowly declining.<\/span><\/p>\n

A pivotal moment occurred between 2006 and 2007, when the number of people living in urban areas surpassed those in rural areas for the first time in history. Since then, the world has experienced an acceleration in urbanization. By 2050, about 6.6 billion people\u201468.4% of the global population\u2014are projected to reside in cities, while rural areas will host around 3 billion people, or 31.6%. A century earlier, in 1950, the situation was the exact opposite: 71% of the population lived in rural areas, while only 29% resided in cities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several factors drive this massive migration to cities and the depopulation of rural areas. Historically, industrialization has progressively drawn more labor away from agriculture, leading to the growth of cities near factories. The development of trade has also contributed, as urban areas offer larger markets and better infrastructure for exchanges. Additionally, there are more job opportunities in urban areas compared to rural ones. Finally, access to essential services such as education and healthcare is simpler and offers more choices in cities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, demographic projections for the period 2024 to 2050 may be revised over time. For example, global population growth could accelerate more than expected, bringing the demographic peak much earlier than 2050. Consequently, the projections reported here may not fully match future demographic trends.<\/span><\/p>\n
