We analyzed eleven countries to examine gender differences in time spent on caregiving and paid work. These countries vary widely in geography, culture, and economic conditions. Yet the pattern is consistent: overall, women work more than men. Often this is because the burden of caregiving within families falls almost entirely on women.<\/em><\/p>\n

The chart shows the weekly time spent by men and women on domestic and care work (in purple) and market work (in green) across various countries. The orange bar indicates the difference in total hours worked between women and men. The horizontal axis lists selected countries, ordered by the size of the total work hour gap between genders\u2014from the widest to the narrowest. The vertical axis shows the weekly hours.<\/p>\n

The data reveal that in all countries analyzed, women work more total hours than men, primarily due to the significantly greater amount of time women spend on domestic and care tasks. However, the origins of this gap vary from country to country.<\/p>\n

In Russia, where women work 14.9 more hours per week than men, the difference is almost entirely due to the gap in domestic and care work (+16.3 hours), while men work slightly more hours in paid market work (+1.4 hours).<\/p>\n

In India, where the total weekly gap is 12.6 hours, the disparity in domestic and care work is even more pronounced (+26.6 hours for women), and men devote significantly more time to paid work than women (+14 hours). This points to a strong gender-based division of labor.<\/p>\n

In Italy, the total weekly gap is 10.6 hours, stemming from 17.3 more hours of domestic work for women, partially offset by the 6.7 additional hours of market work done by men. Italy shows the largest gap among the OECD countries analyzed, indicating an imbalanced division between paid and unpaid labor.<\/p>\n

Even in countries where the gap is smaller, the trends remain similar. In Sweden, where the total difference is 2.5 weekly hours, women spend 5.5 more hours on domestic work and 3 fewer hours on market work than men. In the United Kingdom, the overall weekly gap is 2.4 hours, with women doing 8.9 more hours of domestic work and men doing 6.5 more hours of paid work. In Germany, which has the smallest gap among the countries analyzed (2.2 hours), women spend 9.6 more hours on domestic work, balanced by 7.4 more hours of paid work by men.<\/p>\n
