Between 2000 and 2009, the <\/span>China National Bureau of Statistics<\/span><\/i>\u2014the Chinese equivalent of Italy’s Istat\u2014published an increasingly large number of economic data, as indicated by the yellow bars in the chart. Using an index number set at 100 for the year 2000 (values shown on the left scale of the figure), the height of the bars showcases the number of statistics made public by the Chinese Institute per each year considered. These statistics could indicate, for instance, monthly or annual inflation rates in the country, unemployment rates amongst Chinese youth, or the number of employees in the textile sector in one of the Chinese provinces.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over a span of nine years, the number of statistics published by China doubled. However, after remaining stable for a time, it began to drastically decline: if in 2000 100 indicators were published, by 2022 only 24 were released.<\/b><\/p>\n

What happened in the meantime? The blue line in the chart indicates the growth rate of China’s Gross Domestic Product (values reported on the right scale), a measure of the Chinese economy and its dynamism. <\/span>After a clearly positive period, Chinese growth decreased, dropping from 14% to 3%.<\/b><\/p>\n

Is it a coincidence that the <\/b>China National Bureau of Statistics<\/i><\/b> provides more information when things are going well and less when things are going poorly?<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
