In Italy, the relative income of the elderly is among the highest compared to the national population average. This is largely the legacy of the earnings-based pension calculation system that remained in effect until the mid-1990s, which has allowed the elderly in our country\u2014especially men\u2014to enjoy better economic conditions. However, this situation is likely to change in the future.<\/em><\/p>\n

The chart shows the income of individuals aged 65 and over in countries belonging to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), expressed as a percentage of the average income of the total population in each country. Values above 100% indicate that people over 65 have a higher relative income than the overall population average, while values below 100% indicate they earn less.<\/p>\n

Italy stands out from other countries because the relative income of the elderly is among the highest compared to the population average: it exceeds 100% and ranks among the top OECD countries, following Luxembourg, Israel, and Costa Rica.<\/p>\n

The percentage is slightly lower when considering only those over 75 (94.2%). In this age group, the proportion of women is higher, and since women tend to receive lower pensions than men, they may help bring down the group\u2019s average income.<\/p>\n

Conversely, the percentage increases when only the 66\u201375 age group is considered (111.6%): this likely includes people who are receiving pensions but still working.<\/p>\n

These figures do not reflect internal inequalities among pensioners, which do exist\u2014some individuals in this group still fall below the poverty line. What the data do show is that, on average, elderly Italians are in a better economic position than the rest of the population.<\/p>\n

This is a consequence of the structure of Italy\u2019s pension system, which provides relatively generous benefits, particularly for those with long and continuous careers. The pension calculation method still largely reflects the earnings-based system\u2014when benefits were based solely on the final five years of earnings\u2014thus guaranteeing many generations of retirees a high income level relative to what they contributed. Looking ahead, once the transition to a fully contribution-based system is complete (in which pensions are determined solely by actual contributions rather than salary levels), the relative income of pensioners in Italy is likely to decrease.<\/p>\n
