More mixed data come from states located at an intermediate distance from the country ruled by Putin. That\u2019s because geography isn\u2019t the only factor\u2014diplomatic relations and perceived threats also matter.<\/em><\/p>\n

The chart shows the relationship between defense spending among European NATO countries (vertical axis) and the straight-line distance of their capitals from Moscow, the Russian capital (horizontal axis). Countries in blue are members of the European Union.<\/p>\n

The downward trend line suggests a negative correlation: countries closer to the Russian capital spend more on defense, while those farther away tend to allocate fewer resources to this sector.<\/p>\n

This relationship reflects the geopolitical dynamics among European states. Countries closest to Russia\u2014such as Poland, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania\u2014have higher military expenditures because they are acutely aware of their strategic position and the persistent tensions with Moscow, which have only intensified following the invasion of Ukraine. Greece, though not geographically close to Russia, also has high defense spending\u2014though in its case due to long-standing tensions with Turkey.<\/p>\n

Conversely, countries located farther from Moscow\u2014like Spain, Portugal, and Iceland\u2014dedicate a much smaller portion of their budgets to defense. Italy and France, at an intermediate distance, show moderate spending levels. Among the countries at a \u201cmedium distance\u201d from Moscow, Luxembourg stands out for even lower investment.<\/p>\n

The negative relationship between defense spending and distance from Moscow should not be interpreted to mean that geography alone determines spending levels. Political context, alliances, and threat perceptions also play a significant role. Countries like Germany and Belgium, for example\u2014despite being relatively close to Russia\u2014spend less than others in the same region.<\/p>\n
