The data distinguish between the overall number of interruptions with operational impact\u2014less serious disruptions such as short-term closures of a section or rerouting of trains onto alternative tracks\u2014and those with serious consequences, defined as having an impact of more than 50% on line capacity (where \u201cline capacity\u201d indicates the maximum number of trains that can safely travel on a section within a given time).<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the total number of interruptions rose to 207, compared to 129 in 2023 (+60%). The increase in serious interruptions was even more pronounced: from 79 to 133 over the same period (+68%). Forecasts point to further problems ahead: in 2025, 479 total interruptions are expected, of which 187 serious; in 2026, the figure is projected to grow to 484, with 232 serious interruptions.<\/p>\n<p>Interruptions may be caused by scheduled works, extraordinary maintenance, or unforeseen events such as landslides, floods, or equipment failures. Even brief disruptions can compromise freight logistics chains, which require reliable timing and stable routes. Moreover, on shared lines or in strategic nodes, traffic conflicts can also disrupt passenger services.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in interruptions between 2023 and 2024 must be understood in the context of the major construction projects launched with NRRP funds, affecting many strategic routes: from Rome\u2013Florence to Milan\u2013Genoa, from coastal lines to the Genoa hub and the freight corridors of Lombardy.
