Without decent wages and effective support, a job is no longer enough to escape poverty – and policies to tackle it remain weak
More and more Italians are struggling to make ends meet despite having a job, especially young people, women, and immigrants. This reality helps explain much of today’s youth distress. While unemployment at least offers the hope of escaping poverty by finding work, realizing that even a paycheck cannot cover basic needs creates deep frustration. By insisting that work alone is the way out of poverty, the government is ignoring a social emergency that risks becoming a matter of public order.
